Madison
County Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Plan - Draft
The Bicycle-Pedestrian Facilities Plan aims to improve and expand this
system of bicycle and pedestrian paths in Madison County, to provide
recreation and transportation options in order to enhance the quality
of life and potentially alleviate congestion.
MCCOG will begin with an inventory of existing roads,
paths, and related facilities and then propose ways to improve connections
between
existing paths. Potential new routes and connections will be located,
and improvements to existing paths will be suggested. The plan will
also seek ways to connect Madison County’s paths to others in
surrounding counties. The network will ultimately connect activity
clusters, entertainment, schools, parks, and the surrounding counties.
This plan will be developed through coordination with the Indiana
Department of Transportation (INDOT), the Indiana
Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the central Indiana region, transit groups, special
interest groups, local officials, and the general public. The development
of a regional bicycle network is supported by federal and state transportation
policy goals.
On-Street bicycle routes have been developed in Madison County as a result of the Bike/Pedestrian Plan. Brochures have been produced to explain each route by giving a histrorical background, trip highlights, photos, and maps. These brochures can be accessed below, and are available in designated boxes throughout Madison County.
